Northport Project
Location: Northport, MI.
For this project, our client originally reached out to us regarding adding landscaping and SOD around their recently built guest home. We arrived on site, and this project quickly went from some plants and SOD for the guesthouse, to them wanting suggestions for the rest of the home!
Where We Started
The client had a very old and lifted flagstone walkway that could be dangerous for them, as they are older and have grand children. The landscaping was withered, and there were areas where grass was hard to grow.
Design & Process
We suggested replacing the walkway with something that had a flatter surface. They wanted to keep a flagstone look and we knew pavers was the best way to go. They also wanted to extend the walkway to add another entrance to lead to the new guest home. Their existing landscaping hadn't been redesigned in over 15 years. They wanted a fresh feel. We went with Sod to give them a lush lawn, and new planting to brighten the place. In addition to the main areas, we decided to extend the landscaping by the lake. We added some appeal in the shaded area, and redesigned it to incorporate shade loving plants.
Below shows the landscaping design we came up with for the backyard area:
Planning Stages
When we start a project we often divide it into individual work areas. This is often done when a project is completed in parts then as a whole. Sodding, hardscaping, and front portion of the landscaping was the first phase of the project we focused on. The backyard, and extended landscaping would be done the next year, when we started phase 2 of this project.
Stage 1 - Sodding
The first priority we established when embarking on this project was transforming the previously barren lawn into a vibrant and inviting space. We carefully rolled out sheets of freshly cut sod, meticulously installing them to create a lush, green landscape. This revitalized the area as a perfect backdrop for outdoor activities and gatherings.

Stage 1 - Hardscaping
To begin installing the paver pathways, we carefully marked out measurement lines using spray paint. This allowed us to visualize the layout before we continued. Next, we cut the sod to create clear trails where the pavers would be laid and installed. Doing it this way helped us ensure that each segment fit seamlessly into the design of the landscape

Stage 2 - Landscaping
A year after the first stage was completed, we returned to Northport, MI to install the final step of this project. A waterfront garden, and planting beds around the back side of the home help create a seamless transition from the front to the back area of the property. It was tied all together with more beautiful hydrangeas and boxwoods by the back porch, and native shade-friendly plants accentuating the pillars of trees.

The Transformation
When we came to Northport, MI to start this project the property was in need of new look after 15yrs. There was a lot of space to fill, but that only gave us more room to be creative and improve things. With a little creativity we were able to transform this space into a place that the home owner and their guests will be able to enjoy!
