Crescent Beach, Portage Lakeside Project
Location: Portage Lake, MI.
This client reached out to us looking to install a retaining wall for their newly built home in Portage Lake, MI. They were very excited about moving into their new home. When we started working with this client they came looking a retaining wall, however plans soon expanded to include a full outdoor living space with patio, walkways, turf, and dog area!
Where We Started
The clients were within 2 months of their move in, In order to move in they needed to build a retaining wall as part of passing a building inspection. The home was situated on an elevated platue, and without a retaining wall soil erosion could damage the foundations. After construction the area around the house was left barren, and they did not have a pathed drive.
Design & Process
When we started on the design, our client knew the wanted a couple off essential things. Firstly was to build the retaining wall around the house, and create an outdoor living area on the surface. This involved deisgning and deviding up the space into patio and garden area, as well as adding a turf fenced dog area. This way them and their furry family could enjoy the back patio together. We also made plans to add a poured cement drive way/parking area, along with some front yard landscaping.

Planning Stages
When we start a project we often divide it into individual work areas. This is often done when a project is completed in parts then as a whole. Our client decided it would be better to complete it at once since they were on a short timeframe to move in. Below we'll go into more detail about how we completed this project from start to finish!
Driveway
One of the first things we worked on for this project we worked on was pouring a concrete drive and walkways. This would give us better acesss to the worksite for when we built the rest of the hardscaping and retaining wall.

Hardscaping
Once the drive was done we started on building a foundation for the retaining wall. For this project we created a full wrap around wall from front to back, with stairs leading down to the back yard. Lighting was installed on the walls and stairs for accibility. Once this was done we moved on to leveling out the top, and installing the walkways and patio.

Artificial Turf & Fenced Area
After the was hardscaping was installed, we worked on creating a play pen for their dogs on the other side of the main patio platform. Our client wanted to have a low maintenace care, and chose turf to install on the retaining wall platform. Otherwise it would be a difficult area to mow, and a lot of up keep. It also provided better drainage. We installed artifical turf as a base, and added a vinyl fence with two gates around the perimeter.

Landscaping
Our client wanted to have a lovey butterfly garden by their patio, and additional landscaping by their front door. The rest of the yard and lawn was graded and seeded.

The Transformation
When we first came to this property on Portage Lake, MI it was a new opertunity for us help these home owners create their outdoor living new beginings with their new home. What started as basic build, soon blossomed into the outdoor living space of their dreams!
